Florida State Concludes Preparations For Spring Game

April 6, 2001

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Seminoles’ football team conducted a 12-period work-out in shorts in its final spring practice before the annual Garnet and Gold game. The Seminoles completed a short practice, beginning at 4:45 p.m., with hundreds of high school coaches on the sidelines.

“Today’s practice was shorter in part because of the high school coaches,” FSU offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden said. “With the 12-period workout we only got in about 10 plays of 11-on-11.”

Florida State started the practice off with blocking and tackling drills, as well as working on assignments. The squad broke into 1-on-1 drills in period eight, and moved to 2-on-2 drills in the ninth period. Periods 10-11 featured skeleton offense, and the team wrapped up the practice with 11-on-11 in the final period.

Chris Rix continued to run the first team offense in preparations for Saturday’s spring game, while Anquan Boldin was at the helm of the second team offense. Both quarterbacks connected on several passes in skeleton offense, including Boldin’s 40-yard strike to Matt Juaire. Junior Patrick Hughes caught a ball over the middle at the tight end position as well.

The short scrimmage ended with three impressive plays, all coming from Boldin. After a 12-yard run out of the backfield, Boldin launched a 43-yard pass to Talman Gardner. Gardner was also the recipient of a 13-yard reverse before the 12th period came to a close.

“The scrimmage tomorrow is an opportunity for some of the second team guys to make a move for a starting role,” Bowden said. “We’re going to treat it like a scrimmage, but this is a pride thing for these guys in the spring game.”

The Seminoles will conclude spring practice with the Garnet and Gold game, Sat., April 6. Gates open to Doak Campbell Stadium at 12:30 p.m., and the scrimmage is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The celebration in honor of Chris Weinke’s Heisman Award will take place at half time of the game.
