ATLANTA, Ga. – After a morning of five Seminoles advancing to the round of 32 of singles, Florida State took control of the doubles draw winning six of seven matches. Three teams compete in tomorrow’s quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
“I am proud of the guys to have three teams go to the quarterfinals,” said Hultquist. “We also had another team that had a great battle but came up short in a tiebreaker. Benjamin and Marco highlighted the night by having a win over the No. 7 doubles team in the nation. Blake and Dominic played better as the day went on in doubles and I’m pleased with Cristian and Jose’s play.”
Competing at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on the campus of Georgia Tech, the Seminoles started slow winning only one of five matches until the team finished with four straight wins to advance five players to Sunday’s round of 32 of the singles draw. The team did win four of six three set matches.
Junior Dominic Cotrone got the first win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 match over Jake Bouchillon of Kennesaw State. Junior Benjamin Lock followed suit in a match against Thomas Cook of Georgia State. He lost the first set but came back to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
“I was playing tentative and not too loose which made me not be the aggressive one so I let him take control of the match,” said Gracia. “After he broke me early in the second set I just let the shots go and didn’t think about it as I went on to win the match.”
Closing out singles was sophomore Michael Rinaldi against Kennesaw State’s Simon Pritchard. After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, he fought back strong in the second set and proceeded to play lights out tennis in the third for the 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play the Seminoles started strong with No. 5 Cotrone and senior Blake Davis winning 8-5 against USF’s Paul Polarczyk and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy in the round of 32. In the round of 16, they took down Florida Gulf Coast’s Jordi Vives and Lucas Vaz 8-2.
“I thought I played well today,” said Cotrone. “I tried to stay solid in singles and find a rhythm on the courts. It was a lot of fun playing doubles with Blake again. We came out and played really well against some good teams, it was good for us to gain confidence with those two wins.”
Next up for Florida State was Lock and sophomore Marco Nunez. In the round of 32 the duo won 8-5 over Mercer’s Oliver Snaider and Austin Emmet. In the round of 16, they faced off against the No. 7 pair of Garrett Brasseaux and Nathan Pasha. Nunez, a transfer from Georgia, and Lock got the upset with a 8-6 win.
The last doubles group to reach the quarterfinals is Gonzalez Mendez and Gracia. The dup played great tennis to win 8-3 over Thomas Cook and Valentin Horvat of Georgia State. Facing Florida’s Richard Brej and Maxx Lipman did not stop the Seminoles as they went on to win 8-1.
“I just came out swinging in doubles during our first match,” continued Gracia. “Cristian did a great job of pumping me up during both matches. In the second match against Florida, I didn’t want to lose to them. I just played off pure adrenalin against our rivals.”
Consolation singles matches start at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Check back to Seminoles.com for all your information on the men’s tennis team and follow the team at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
