Senior guard Todd Galloway scored 21 points, junior forward Alexander Johnson scored 20 and junior forward Al Thornton and sophomore guard Isaiah Swann added 19 each to lead the Florida State men’s basketball team to a 105-91 victory over Delta State in an exhibition game at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles led by as many as 14 points in the first half and by as many as 16 in the second half as they pulled away to win their only exhibition game leading up to the 2005-06 season. Florida State travels to play at Jacksonville Nov. 19 in their regular season opener.
Galloway, the Seminoles’ starting point guard, scored 21 points on five of seven shooting from the field (including three of five from the 3-point line) and eight of nine shooting from the free throw line. He also added a game-high tying four steals to goal along with two assists and two rebounds. Johnson also shot well from the field as he made six of his 13 field goal attempts (including one of two from the 3-point line) and made seven of 10 attempts from the free throw line. Florida State’s starting center added four rebounds and one blocked shot in 22 minutes played.
Guard Jeremy Richardson led Delta State with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes of play. He made a game-high four 3-point field goals and was five of six from the free throw line. Richardson also pulled down eight rebounds. Forward Jasper Johnson scored 24 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with three steals in 31 minutes.
Florida State looked to have broken open the game early as they scored 11 consecutive points to move a 9-9 tie to a 20-9 lead with 13:04 remaining in the first half. Seminole freshman Uche Echefu scored all of his six points on a free throw, a dunk and a 3-point shot during the two-minute stretch.
The Statesmen, who shot 51.6 percent for the game, refused to go quietly into the exhibition afternoon went on an 18-6 run to take a 27-26 lead with 9:01 remaining in the first half. Delta State did not fall behind until a Diego Romeo lay-up tied the game at 38 and a made free throw by Galloway put Florida State up for good a 39-38 with 3:57 left in the first half. From that point in the first half, the Seminoles outscored the Statesmen by a 15-8 margin and led 54-46 at halftime.
The Seminoles led by double-digits throughout the second half until Delta State closed the gap to nine (93-84) with 4:43 left in the game. Florida State outscored Delta State, 12-7, to close out the game.
Led by sophomore Isaiah Swann five assists the Seminoles recorded a positive assist:turnover ratio with 15 assists and only 13 turnovers. Galloway and sophomore Ralph Mims led the team with four steals each as the Seminoles recorded a total of 13 steals. Florida State shot .816 from the free throw line (40 of 49) and made nine of 23 3-point field goal attempts (.391 percent).
