March 21, 1998

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — No. 12 Florida State (23-7, 6-0 ACC) belted 15 hits,
including a grand slam by leftfielder Karl Jernigan, as the Seminoles
defeated No. 14 Duke (23-5, 3-4 ACC) to extend their winning streak to 12
games.

Right-hander Jon McDonald (5-2) scattered three hits and held the Blue
Devils to one run in seven innings in his fifth consecutive win. McDonald
struck out six batters while walking four in the outing.

FSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as second baseman Brooks
Badeaux scored on a basehit by designated-hitter Terry Henderson. Duke
right-hander Stephen Cowie (6-1) then loaded the bases for Jernigan, who
blasted his third home run of the year. All five runs in the inning were
unearned due to an error by second baseman J.D. Alleva.

Duke put a run on the board in the fourth inning as third baseman Jeff
Becker doubled and scored on a single by leftfielder Michael Fletcher.

FSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Badeaux and
first baseman Kevin Cash both singled and scored. Cash also hit a solo
home run in the eighth inning and finished the day 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Designated hitter Ed Conrey belted a solo home run and catcher Gregg
Maluchnik contributed a two-run blast for three Blue Devil runs in the
eighth inning off FSU reliever Mike Smalley.
