Florida State Defeats Jacksonville 6-1

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team (1-0)opened their season with a win against Jacksonville (0-1) on Saturday, January 27, with a score of 6-1. The Seminoles won all of the doubles matches to take the doubles point and five of the singles matches.

“It’s always good to start the season with a win, no matter who it’s against,” stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. . “Getting used to the dual matches and the head-to-head competition is really important going into our Georgia match this coming weekend. I think everyone felt pretty good about the day, with maybe a few exceptions. It was a good start; we took care of our work; no excuses and they got the job done.”

The Seminoles started the day in doubles action with No. 27 freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) and senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) defeating Emese Sulyos and Iva Jaresove 8-4. Juniors Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) and Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) beat Lena Willi and Fernanda Carrero 8-5. Winning 8-4 was freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) and senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) against Tatiana Soldatova and Cristina Paiva-Flor.

In singles action, No. 58 Macfarlane won 6-2, 6-2 against Willi while Slater won 6-4, 6-2 verses Soldatova. Wente picked up a point for the Noles with her 6-1, 6-4 win over Jaresova while Foley picked up a point against Carrero 6-3, 6-1. Marobela defeated her opponent, Paiva-Flor, 6-0, 6-1. Walter fell to Sulyos 2-6, 3-6 in the last match of the day.

The Seminoles hit the road next weekend against No. 24 Georgia on Saturday, February 3rd at 1 p.m. Their next home match is February 17 verses Stetson and Florida A&M.
