Tallahassee, Fla. –
It was a strong start to the 2007 dual match season as Florida State men’s tennis dominated on home territory overpowering cross-town rivals Florida A&M, 7-0. The Seminoles, who have not dropped an opening day match in six straight seasons, improved to 1-0 season record.
In doubles competition, Florida State jumped to a quick lead in the number three spot, sophomores Ryan Boyajian (Weston, Fla.) and Chris Cloer (Brevard, NC) as they defeated Rattler’s Paul Paige and Forest Jenkins 8-2 while on court two senior Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Bradley Mixson (Miami, Fla.) defeated Clifford Malivert and Jarrell Williams 8-3. With the doubles point already decided, sophomores Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) ended an unfinished match on center court leading over FAMU’s Artiom Podgainii and Simba Happy 5-4.
Momentum remained in the Seminoles court as singles play began as freshman Bradley Mixson in the number five spot dominated with a bagel-bagel victory over Rattler’s Paul Paige 6-0, 6-0. Next to finish was the number six position, sophomore Andrew Bailey with a smooth win defeating FAMU’s Forest Jenkins 6-2, 6-2 while on center court, freshman Jean-Yves Aubone won the number one position defeating the Rattler’s Clifford Malivert 6-2, 6-3.
“Jean-Yves is playing well and he’s probably one of our better players right now so I’ll continue to adjust the line up as the season goes on,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.
Court four contained a heated battle as sophomore Cloer overcame a tight match defeating Rattler’s Simba Happy 6-4, 6-3 while on court three Sucupira spilt sets to later conquer FAMU’s Jarrell Williams in a third set tie-break 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. The last match to finish took place on court two as No. 76 ranked Sykut defeated Florida A&M’s Artiom Podgainii 6-4, 6-1. Senior Ytai Abougzir did not perform.
“We’ll probably continue to move the line up around a little bit,” coach Hultquist said. “Especially since it’s early in the year and I plan to play the guys that are hot a little bit higher.
Florida State Seminoles play their second dual match of the season later this afternoon against the North Florida Osprey’s at 4:00 p.m. at the Scott Spechier Tennis Center.
