TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State (37-14) returned to the win column Thursday evening downing Grambling State (14-32) 9-1 in a game called with one out in the bottom of the six due to heavy rain that pounded the Tallahassee area. With the win, the Seminoles pushed their consecutive win total to 12 straight on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.
Florida State grabbed the early lead and never looked back scoring twice in the second and five in the third to run out to a commanding 7-0 lead. Six of the nine runs scored on Thursday night came on two outs. The Seminoles finished the game with 13 walks, two off the season-high set against Hofstra.
“I was very pleased with our approach to tonight’s game,” said head coach Mike Martin. “There was no one just going through the motions. I liked the way we went out there and got after it. We were very disciplined (at the plate), very proud of what I saw out there.”
Tommy Oravetz continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3 with a single, a home run and three RBI. The senior designated hitter recorded a bunt single in his first at-bat and then unloaded on his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third. The home run was a rocket to right center that bounced off the top of the fence and out of the park.
Jason Stidham reached base on all three of his plate appearances recording a pair of walks and a two-run triple in the third. The triple was his first of the season. Tyler Holt extended his streak of reaching base to 41 straight games as he drew three walks.
Sean Gilmartin was credited with his first career complete game working all six innings in moving to 10-2 on the year. The freshman southpaw allowed just one run on two hits as both hits come in the fourth inning. He retired the Tigers in order in three innings while facing no more than four batters in five of the six innings that he worked. Gilmartin finished the game with six strikeouts.
“I was able to throw pretty much everything for a strike tonight, which was good,” said Gilmartin. “It was good to come out and get a win.”
Ruairi O’Connor brought home Stidham for the first run of the game drawing a walk with the bases loaded in the second. Stidham drove in his third run of the game in the fourth as he walked with the bases loaded. Rafael Lopez scored on the play after singling through the right side with one out.
Mike McGee would drive in the final run of the game in the sixth on a single to left scoring Holt.
Grambling State’s Milt Barney was responsible for the lone Tiger run of the game as he belted his third home run of the season in the fourth, a solo shot to left.
