DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Duke coach Gail Goestenkors sensed her team weren’t
ready to play, while Florida State coach Sue Semrau knew her Seminoles were.
Brooke Wyckoff scored 20 points as Florida State ended No. 4 Duke’s 12-game
winning streak with a 71-69 win Thursday night.
“Not one time did a player on my team flinch,” Semrau said. “I’m really
proud of them.”
Florida State (14-8, 6-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored its final six
points from the free-throw line. Duke’s Georgia Schweitzer finished the scoring
with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
“They were ready and we were not,” Goestenkors said. “They hit from the
inside and they hit from the outside. They had players hit threes who hadn’t
hit any all year, or one all year.”
The Seminoles led 38-33 at halftime, then watched as the Blue Devils (21-2,
9-2) opened the second half with a 13-0. Florida State trailed by three points
with six minutes remaining.
Alana Beard, playing for the first time since dislocating her left thumb
Jan. 18, led the Blue Devils with 19 points. Schweitzer added 17, and Sheana
Mosch had 14.
“We played really great help defense and went to the boards hard,” said
Wyckoff, who had eight rebounds. “We really wanted this game.”
