The 15th ranked Florida State men’s swimming and diving team will swim for their first ACC Championship tonight. The Seminoles hold a 87.5 point lead over eight-time defending champion Virginia. Tonight’s push will be for Florida State’s first men’s ACC swimming and diving championship.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Freshman Robert Padgett (Greensboro, N.C.) claimed the second seed with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:45.93. Junior Jarryd Botha (Worchester, South Africa) will swim from the fourth seed as he turned in an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:46.66
Junior Ed Denton (Maidenhead, England) will swim as the top seed in the 100-yard freestyle. He swam an NCAA “B” cut time of 44.03. Senior captain Alex Kennon (Winter Haven, Fla.) is locked into the fourth seed with an NCAA “B” cut time of 44.52. Sophomore Jimmy Holway (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) will swim the bonus consolation final as he turned in the 17th quickest time of 45.48.
In the 200-yard breststroke, senior Paul Erben (Panama City, Fla.) claimed the third seed with an NCAA “B” cut time of 2:00.73. Junior Billy Jamerson (Savannah, Ga.) will swim from the fifth seed with his qualifying time of 2:01.34. Freshman Scott Thacker (Lynchburg, Va.) also made the final, taking the seventh seed with a time of 2:02.04.
Junior Ian Powell (Guernsey, Channel Islands) checked in with a time of 1:48.71 to claim the seventh seed in the final.Senior Mark Nichols (Charlotte, N.C.) will swim for points tonight as he is the 13th seed in the consolation final, after swimming a time of 1:49.97 Junior Michael Rice (North Miami, Fla.) swam a time of 1:51.00 to claim the 18th seed in the bonus consolation final.
Senior Steve Roof (Canton, Ohio) is the top seed in the 1650-yard freestyle. He will swim from lane four in the fifth heat which will kick off the evening’s final session. Junior Kyle Young (Oviedo, Fla.) is seeded fourth in the event, placing him in lane six. Freshman Nick Graves (Lexington, Ky.) is the Seminole’s third entry into the fifth heat. He will swim from lane eight. Freshman Shawn Erickson (Tallahassee, Fla.) will swim the fourth and final “early” heat, which will begin around 5:45 p.m.
Day four finals begin at 7:00 at the Koury Natatorium. Finals will be held in the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly events.
