TEMPE, Ariz. — Righthander Chris Chavez and DH Kevin Cash led the Seminoles (2-2) to a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Arizona State (8-1) at Packard Stadium in front of 3,192 fans.
Chavez (1-1) held Arizona State two runs on four hits while striking out five batters in 8 2/3 innings pitched before he was relieved by lefthander Mike DiBlasi. DiBlasi earned his second save of the season as he retired the final batter.
Cash led the Seminoles as he provided FSU’s offense with three RBI on two hits. Cash put the Seminoles on the board first in the fourth inning with a solo home run to rightfield. He then broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with a two-run double to leftfield scoring Brooks Badeaux and Jose Zabala.
Lefthander Ryan Mills (2-1) gave up three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched for the Sun Devils. Mills struck out four batters in the outing.
Arizona State tied the score at 1-1 as third baseman Andrew Beinbrink singled to lead off the fifth inning, advanced to second base on a ground ball and scored on muffed pick off play by FSU pitcher Chris Chavez.
ASU rightfielder Mikel Moreno cut the Seminoles lead to 3-2 with a solo home run to leftfield in the ninth inning.
