TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Jason Capel’s 3-point play with 51.8 seconds left
Wednesday carried North Carolina to a 70-67 victory at Florida State, moving
the Tar Heels into a third-place tie with Virginia in the Atlantic Coast
Conference.

Capel, fouled by Florida State’s Justin Mott as he scored a layup, added the
free throw to give North Carolina a 69-66 lead. Freshman Joseph Forte added a
free throw with 20.7 seconds.

The layup was set up when North Carolina’s Ed Cota blocked a jump shot by
Delvon Arrington.

Seven-foot Brendan Haywood led North Carolina (17-10, 8-5 ACC) with 19
points followed by Capel with 15, Forte with 14 and Kris Lang finished with 10,
including two free throws with 1:28 left that pulled the Heels to within 67-66.

Haywood, who came into the game shooting 73.5 percent on the year didn’t
miss in seven field goal tries and led the winners with six rebounds to help
the winners shoot 59.1 percent.

Ron Hale, who didn’t start because he missed a class, led Florida State with
22 points and Damous Anderson added 18.

Hale’s 3-point play with 1:41 left gave Florida State a 67-64 lead, but the
Seminoles couldn’t score again.

Florida State (10-14, 5-8) led by five points on two occasions early in the
first half when the lead changed five times before North Carolina took a 32-29
halftime lead.

The Seminoles won their first meeting of the year, 76-71, at Chapel Hill,
N.C.

North Carolina travels Saturday to Maryland while Florida State hosts
Virginia.
