GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After dropping their first match of the season, the No. 35 Florida State men’s tennis team (9-1) bounced back to 4-0 against the No. 44 UNC-Wilmington (1-2) in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on the campus of the University of Florida.
The Seminoles once again won the all-important doubles point. After losing the first match on court two, the Seminoles bounced back with junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and sophomore Michael Rinaldi winning 6-5 (2). Senior Blake Davis and junior Dominic Cotrone broke the Seahawks on court one to win 6-4 and clinch the doubles point.
“It was a good win today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “UNC-Wilmington is a very good team and it was important to win the doubles point. They got us on court two but I was pleased with Cristian and Michael getting their win on the third court. Blake and Dominic also did a great job of getting the break at 5-4 to win on court one.”
In singles play, the Seminoles got off to a quick lead by winning all six first sets. Cotrone won the first singles match as he defeated Sam Williams 6-2, 6-0 on court one. Freshman Grayson Goldin won his tenth consecutive match as he defeated Karan Salwan 6-3, 6-4 on the sixth court.
“I was glad to see us get all six first sets in singles,” continued Hultquist. “That really put us in control of the match and it stopped UNC-Wilmington from getting momentum back. Grayson continued his strong play and remains undefeated for the spring. It was good to see Dominic dominate his opponent and Blake to clinch the match as a senior.”
Davis bounced back from his loss on Saturday to win 6-3, 6-3 against Pedro Mol to clinch the match for the Seminoles.
“It was really important to win today,” said Davis. “It was a little demoralizing losing yesterday but the team did a great job of correcting our problems and bouncing back to win today. It was a tough match for me today, but I did my best to get a quick start in the first and second sets. I was just playing for the team and was able to get a win for the team.”
The Seminoles return to the courts February 7th against Oklahoma at home. Check back to Seminoles.com for all your information on the men’s tennis team and follow the team at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
