Florida State Finishes Day Two Of The Miami Invitational

Nov. 8, 2008

MIAMI, Fla. – Florida State had yet another thriving day at the Miami Invitational in Coral Gables with three players having 2-0 records so far. The Seminoles had a stiff competition again today against two other instate rivals: University of Central Florida and Florida International.

No. 113 Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) had another booming day in singles when she prevailed past Miami’s Gabriela Mejia, 6-3, 6-4. Suess is now 2-0 in singles for the overall tournament.

Sophomore Bonny Davidson (Johannesburg, South Africa) took Suess’ lead and also continued her winning streak by beating Alessa Waibel of Miami, 6-1, 6-3. Davidson is not 2-0 for the singles tournament.

“Competing against Miami is always a ferocious battle, and I’m proud of the way the girls fought, despite home court advantage for Miami,’ said assistant coach Oliver Foreman.

Making her presence known on the court was junior Jessica Sucupira (Wente) (Whitehouse, Tex.) as she won her match against Miami’s Claudia Wasilewski, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

“I was impressed with Jessica’s attitude on court,” said Foreman. “It could have been very easy for her to drift out of the match but that is her ‘demon’ she is eradicating match by match.”

Despite having a victorious day yesterday in singles, No. 53 Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) was upset by No. 109 Bianca Eichkorn of Miami, 6-2, 6-7,4-6 .

The Seminoles were not as victorious on the doubles’ front. Macfarlane and Suess fell to Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo of Florida International, 2-8. Sucupira (Wente) and Davidson also loss to Florida International’s Alyona Tsutskova and Maria Dolores Pazo, 4-8.

“The difference this morning in doubles was simply if you give good teams the lead, it is very difficult to regain your lost points,” said Foreman. “FIU played that today, and we just couldn’t play catch up.”

The Seminoles will be back in action tomorrow for their last day of the fall season. For more information on Florida State athletics, go to
