Florida State Football Team Completes Second Full Scrimmage

Aug. 14, 2002

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – The No. 3 Florida State Seminoles, who will face Iowa State in just 10 days, held their second full scrimmage of the preseason at Doak Campbell Stadium late Wednesday afternoon. Quarterback Chris Rix completed 11-of-18 passes for 181 yards and Talman Gardner led all receivers with 115 yards on five catches. Kendyll Pope and Eric Powell paced the defense with four tackles apiece.

“I thought the offense did a little bit better,” said head coach Bobby Bowden. “There’s still too many errors and those are things we’ve got to eliminate. We came out pretty good on the injuries. I think Brett Williams hurt his shoulder again, the one that he had hurt. There was some pretty good hitting going on. The key to us is getting better every time we practice and getting better every time we scrimmage.”

Freshman tailback Leon Washington scored the first touchdown of the scrimmage when he found the endzone from 19 yards out on a toss sweep. Just before the break, Joey Kaleikini was able to pull down Rix’s hail mary off a deflection from 44 yards out.

The defense got into the scoring column when Allen Augustin returned a fumble 44 yards for a touchdown. Xavier Beitia completed the day’s scoring with a 28-yard field goal.

Fabian Walker, who mainly ran the No. 2 offense with Adrian McPherson out with a sprained ankle, went 5-of-13 for 74 yards with one interception. Wyatt Sexton completed 3-of-6 passes for 26 yards with the No. 3 offense.

P.K. Sam was the scrimmage’s second-leading receiver, hauling in three passes for 63 yards. Willie Reid added 12 yards on two receptions.

Washington totaled 22 yards on four carries to lead all rushers. Starting tailback Greg Jones carried only twice, but managed to gain 21 yards. Lorenzo Booker ran for 21 yards on seven carries and Torrance Washington had seven yards on six attempts.

“The running backs were excellent I thought,” said Bowden. “We held Greg (Jones) and Nick (Maddox) out for the most part. We didn’t look at Willie Reid much today either. We know what they can do. We looked at those freshmen running backs and they are impressive.”

In addition to their four tackles, Pope had a pass break-up and Powell recorded a sack and a tackle for loss. Marcello Church (3 tackles, 1 sack), Pat Watkins (3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss), Tony Benford (3 tackles) and Kevin Emanuel (2 sacks) also posted solid outings for the defense.
