Florida State Football Team Holds Final Practice Before Scrimmage

Aug. 17, 2001

Tallahassee, Fla. — The Florida State Seminoles practiced 24 periods in full pads Friday morning, but opted to work indoors for the evening session in preparation for Saturday’s scrimmage, which is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Offensive guard Otis Duhart suffered a right knee sprain during the morning session and had an MRI in the afternoon. His status will be determined Saturday once team doctors have evaluated the results of the MRI.

“Today’s the hottest day we’ve had,” head coach Bobby Bowden said. “It’s like being in an oven out there. Most of our kids handled it OK and I was mighty proud of them, because it was hot.”

The Seminoles took four re-hyrdration breaks (water and Powerade), instead of the scheduled two to combat the conditions.

“We had four (breaks) instead of two and we needed every one of them,” Bowden said. “We sure did. It’s just too hot.”

With the injury to Duhart and the absence of Holland (heat precaution), freshmen Bobby Meeks and Blake Williams worked some with the first team.

“If you get too many (injuries) at one position, that’s where it kills you,” Bowden said. “You hope they’re spaced out, if you’re going to have them, but it doesn’t work that way. It’s either all of your receivers, or all of your guards or something like that.”

The 11-on-11 drills were highlighted by long completions from Chris Rix to both Anquan Boldin and Javon Walker, who was heavily covered. Boldin added a 20-yard gain on a reverse. Malcolm Tatum intercepted an Adrian McPherson pass intended for Joey Kaleikini.

The defense dominated in goal line drills, allowing the offense to score just once in eight tries, which was a pass play to Chad Maeder from McPherson.

“Yesterday, the offense won most of it,” Bowden said. “This time, the defense wiped them out. That’s good. I like to see improvement. The next time the other might come back.”

The team will hold a short kicking scrimmage Saturday morning with the first full scrimmage scheduled to start later that day (5:00 p.m.) at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Injury Report: Holland (heat precaution), O.J. Jackson (heat precaution), Duhart (right knee sprain), Lemar Parrish (left ankle sprain) and Eric Broe (asthma related condition). Atrews Bell and Talman Gardner saw limited action for the first time Friday as they continue to recover from hamstring injuries.

The following players will not participate in Saturday’s scrimmage: Bell (hamstring), Gardner (hamstring), Matt Heinz (knee sprain), P.K. Sam (hamstring), Duhart (knee), Kendyll Pope (neck sprain), David Castillo (hand), William McCray (shoulder), Parrish (ankle), Carver Donaldson (groin) and Willie Reid (ribs).
