TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –The Florida State men’s tennis team (11-3) takes on intrastate rival USF (5-2) at noon on Saturday. The two teams are both coming off losses this week and look to get back on track at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
“We’re playing our second in-state rivalry match this week,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We’ve prepared for another tough match. We played well against Florida on Wednesday night and we need to be ready to do the same tomorrow against USF. They are a much improved team this year and have had some solid wins.”
The No. 36 Seminoles hold a 25-20 record over the No. 45 Bulls in a series that dates back to 1969. Last season Florida State won 6-1with current Seminoles Blake Davis and Michael Rinaldi gaining singles wins.
For the Seminoles, senior Blake Davis and junior Dominic Cotrone are ranked No. 23 in doubles. The Bulls have one player ranked in singles in No. 81 Roberto Cid. Cid is also ranked No. 29 in doubles with teammate Sasha Gozun. Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz are ranked No. 35.
Against Florida this past week, Cotrone upset the No. 65 player in the nation to up his singles record to 14-5 this year. Junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez won his 20th match of the year with a win over a Gator and is 20-2 this year. Freshman Grayson Goldin holds a 17-3 record with a perfect 9-0 mark this spring.
