Florida State Golden Girls Earn National Recognition

Jan. 31, 2005

The Florida State University Golden Girls, one of the nation’s top collegiate dance squads, continued to display their talent nationally as they placed in the top 10 in two dance categories in mid-January. The team placed fifth in the Hip-Hop category and ninth in the Jazz category of competition at the National Dance Association’s Collegiate Nationals at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Golden Girls dance team is comprised of FSU students hailing from around the state and across the nation. Along with keeping a high academic standing, they practice over 12 hours a week, and perform at every home Florida State Men’s Basketball game.

The competition consisted of preliminary video auditions which determined which squads qualified to travel to Orlando for the national semifinals. On Saturday in the semifinal round the Golden Girls preformed routines in both the Hip-Hop and Jazz divisions. The squad advanced to the finals where a second performance determined their national ranking. The competition is held annually, and draws the biggest names in cheer and dance, including; Tennessee, Texas, LSU, Alabama, Kentucky, and Auburn. This year marks the Florida State’s first year of competition in the Hip-Hop division.

“The girls put in a lot of hard work, and they represented the school and the program very well,” said Florida State’s Spirit Coordinator Staci Sutton. “Numerous other coaches have told me that the squad has shown great improvement. Everyone involved with the Golden Girls is very excited about the future.”

The Golden Girls will perform at the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournament at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., March 10-13.
