Florida State Has Solid Start to the South Regional Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team kicked off the ITA South Regional Championships in Atlanta, Ga. winning its last four matches and had a strong performance from its seniors. Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright each won their singles match as well as a doubles match on Friday.

No. 91 ranked Cartwright went toe-to-toe with Mia King of Georgia and won in dominating fashion 6-2, 6-3. Borthwick faced the toughest opponent of the day in No. 51 ranked Kourtney Keegan of Florida and defeated her 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman sensation Gabriella Castaneda improved her record to 8-0. Continuing her incredible start to her first collegiate season, Castaneda stayed poised in the first set and was able to dominate the second set en route to a straight set victory 7-6, 6-2 against Miami’s No. 111 ranked Monique Albuquerque.

Cartwright and Borthwick came into the fall season ranked No. 9 doubles team in the nation. The senior pair rolled in their first match against Masa Grgan and Marcia Tere-Apisah of Gerogia State, 8-2. The highly ranked duo fell in a back-in-forth second match, 8-6, against Georiga’s Caroline Brinson and Laura Patterson.

Sophomore Daniela Schippers continues her winning streak after cruising against North Florida’s Marina Cunningham 6-0, 6-3. Schippers has now won four straight matches dating back to winning three straight to end the Bedford Cup last weekend.

Castaneda and redshirt freshman Emily Fanning won their first doubles match of the day against Virginie Stein and Jana Hueckinghaus of Kennesaw State, 8-3. In their second match, the freshmen duo had a commanding lead at 7-3 against a pair from Georgia, but was unable to clinch the final point and fell in the tiebreaker 8-7 (5).

Freshman Lana Rush will begin her singles campaign on Saturday after receiving a bye in the first round of the B Draw. Cartwright, Borthwick, Castaneda and Schippers will also be in action beginning at 11 a.m.
