GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Seminoles came out strong today in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships. The team boasted a 5-1 record in singles while also going 3-2 in doubles. The Florida State men’s tennis team is competing on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., against 13 other teams.
“I thought we had a very strong day, probably the best we’ve played this fall,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We won five of six singles matches and then turned around to win three of five doubles matches. I thought doubles climaxed with us beating a really good Georgia Tech team. Gomez is one of the better players in the country so to beat them 9-8 in an exciting 8-6 tiebreaker, I was really proud of how our guys competed and hung in there. I thought we had some real good wins today.”
The Seminoles played in the round of 64 this morning for singles. Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) posted the first win of the morning with a 6-1, 6-4 match over Stetson’s Hans Adrian Riseng. The senior is No. 43 in the nation and is the No. 3 seed of the tournament. Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) defeated Claudin Romano of UCF 6-1, 6-4 next.
Sophomore Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) played in a quick 6-1, 6-2 match to win against Jeff Klotz of Stetson. Tampa’s Connor Smith, a sophomore, produced a 6-3, 6-4 win over Georgia Tech’s Dean O’Brien. Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) faced Mercer’s Pierse Tafelski in a tough three set match.
“I was up a set and then up 4-1 in the second set,” explained Reed. “But then I saw myself down 4-1 in the third set and I was real frustrated. Dwayne and Nick (Crowell) coached me on the side and really settled me down and back to focusing on the court.”
In doubles play, the duo of Bucaro and Reed came out top posting a 2-0 record to advance to the quarterfinals of the championships. The duo quickly defeated Evandro Rosindo and Peter Tauchner of Mercer 8-3. In the round of 16, the pair faced Guillermo Gomez and Dean O’Brien of Georgia Tech. In one of the most exciting matches of the day, the garnet and gold came on top 9-8(6).
“I think finally the work that we’ve been trying to put in at practice all fall is paying off,” said Bucaro. “I was just happy we came through in doubles. I’ve had some close matches this fall and this one turned out well for me. I think we started out really well, got a break early. Anderson and I stayed really focused and at the end of the match we were able to stay positive and win the last point.”
In the round of 32, Kelly-Houston and Owen Long (Tallahassee, Fla.) posted a 9-8(4) win over Riseng and Njal Stene of Stetson. The duo then fell in the round of 16 to Bernstein and Spencer of Georgia 8-0.
