TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State volleyball coach Todd Kress has released the 2002 volleyball schedule. The Lady Seminoles will face stiff competition during the regular season as they take on six teams that appeared in the postseason last year and a number of tough non-conference opponents.
“We tried to schedule as many quality matches early in our schedule to prepare us for ACC play,” said Kress. “I think the schedule poses many challenges for our team.”
Three of the six teams that appeared in the postseason last year, Duke, Georgia Tech and North Carolina, are members of the ACC and will compete against the Lady Seminoles in home-and-away matches during the 2002 season. The three other opponents that appeared in post-season action last year are in-state rivals Florida, Florida A&M and Florida International.
“The schedule has a lot of in-state flavor,” said Kress. “We definitely went out and attempted to get as many Florida schools on the schedule as possible to keep in-state rivalries alive.”
The schedule also includes three regular-season tournaments. To kick off the 2002 season, the Lady Seminoles will travel to Normal, Ill., to take part in the Illinois State Tournament. Teams joining Florida State at the Illinois State Tournament will be, host-team Illinois State, Alabama and Marshall. After a two-game home stint, Florida State will compete in the Florida International Tournament in Miami. Joining the Lady Seminoles in the tournament will be Miami, Florida International and IUPUI. Before traveling to Gainesville to take on Florida, a team that advanced to the Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament in 2001, Florida State will play host to Louisiana-Lafayette, Brown and LSU in the FSU Invitational.
The Lady Seminoles will open the always-challenging ACC schedule on September 27th when they host Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m. Duke will visit Tully Gym on September 28th at 7:00 p.m. Florida State will have the opportunity to avenge the ACC Championship loss to North Carolina when the Tar Heels return to Tallahassee on October 27th for a 2:00 p.m. match.
“The ACC continues to get better and better every year,” said Kress. “From top to bottom, there is not a big difference in the talent of players or level of play.”
