Florida State Hit The Courts For Day One Of Northwestern Wildcat Invitational.

Jan. 16, 2009

Tallahassee, Fla. – When you want to be one of the leading tennis programs in the nation, you have to play against the best to prepare and that’s just what head coach Jennifer Hyde did when she signed up her team to play at the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational. Despite ranked competitors and fierce competition, the Seminoles used that to their advantage and were successful once again.

“We played some pretty good tennis today,” said Hyde. “We needed a chance to get through those first-match jitters today, and we’re able to take care of that this morning.”

On the singles side, the Seminoles finished with a 4-2 record. Veteran Jessica Sucupira (Whitehouse, Texas) began the day with a victory against Shelley Godwin (Alabama), 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Sophomore’s Federica Suess, ranked at No. 53 in the national polls,(Ludwigshafen, Germany) and No. 35 Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) defeated Meritt Emery, 6-3, 6-0 and No. 72 Tiffany Welcher (both from Alabama), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, respectively. Freshman Noemi Scharle (Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg) took her team’s guidance and won her match against Paulina Bigos (Alabama), 6-4, 6-0.

“We did a great job of really getting our teeth into our singles’ matches after a relatively slow start at a few positions,” said Hyde.

On the double’s front, the Seminoles played back to back matches against players from two ranked opponents and finished with a record of 3-3. Suess and Scharle gave way to the first doubles’ win when they faced No. 36 Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell (DePaul), 8-6. Next up was junior’s Sucupira and Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) winning against Selma Salkovic and Sandra Zmak (DePaul), 8-4. Finishing off the victories was sophomore double’s team Bonny Davidson (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Rybakova trumping Katarina Milinkovic and Cali Gustafson (DePaul), 8-1.

“I was happy with how we competed and know our game will only improve as we play more matches this weekend,” said Hyde.

Florida State will be back in action tomorrow morning. For more information on Florida State athletics, go to www.seminoles.com.
