Florida State Holds Up The Unconquered Tradition At The Miami Invitational.

Nov. 7, 2008

MIAMI, Fla. – Florida State concluded its first day at the Miami Invitational with an unbeaten record in singles and doubles. Miami played host to two other in-state rivals, University of Central Florida and Florida International, as top players from all four teams hit the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables early this morning.

“I am very proud of the girls today,” said assistant coach Oliver Foreman. “We displayed the best tennis I have seen as a team since last spring. Each and every member of the team had their own battles to fight on court today in order to get better, and they did it.

The first round of singles began with No. 53 Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah.) defeating Florida International’s No.79 Liset Brito, 6-2, 6-2. Next was No. 113 Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) successfully moving past Florida International’s Priscilla Castillo, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Already having two singles matches under their belt, the Seminoles kept riding the victory wave. Junior Jessica Sucupira (Wente) (Whitehouse Tex.) trumped Florida International’s Maria Dolores 6-1, 6-0 while sophomore Bonny Davidson (Johannesburg, South Africa) beat Maria Spenceley of Florida International, 6-4, 6-3.

“It’s great to see Bonnie and Lauren back in the winners circle,” said Foreman. “They have struggled with their own demons recently and managed to prove they are tough enough to fight through any situation.”

The doubles results were just as thriving as the singles for Florida State. Macfarlane and Suess came out victorious against Central Florida’s Elvira Serrot and Andrea Yacaman, 8-3. Finishing the unconquered day for the Seminoles was Sucupira (Wente) and Davidson beating Central Florida’s Christy Core and Alexis Rodriguez, 8-4.

“They lived up to the motto ‘tough situations don’t last, tough people do’ today,” said Foreman. “It’s great to have them back and see that smile on their faces!”

Sophomore Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) was unsuccessful in her battle today as she lost to Melanie Gloria of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-0 at the National Indoor Championship.
