SEMINOLES KICK OFF SPRING SEASON WITH TOP THREE FINISH
The Florida State men’s golf team got the 2005 spring season off on the right foot with an impressive 3rd place showing at the University of Florida’s Gator Invitational (Feb. 5-6). The Seminoles combined for a cumulative team score of 868 (+28) over the course of the 36-hole event, saving their best for last, and firing the 2nd lowest score on the third and final round (285). The team’s performance led to its first Top 3 finish of the 2004-05 season, and its first Top 5 placing since the Mason Rudolph International in late September (27-28) of the fall season.
BLIXT TOPS THE LEADERBOARD IN GAINESVILLE
Freshman Jonas Blixt is quickly asserting himself as a force on the Seminole squad after finishing in 1st place at last month’s Gator Invitational (Feb. 5th-6th). Blixt was the only player out of a field of 76 to complete the three-round tournament in the black. The Nassjo, Sweden native finished the 36-hole tournament with a -1 (209), also registering a weekend best 68 (-2) on the final day. Through the first two tournaments of the spring season (Gator Invitational, Mercedes-Benz Collegiate) Blixt has emerged as the team’s ace, with a team-best scoring average of 72.33, while also leading the team in rounds under par (2) and rounds under 75 (5).
BLIXT ICES THE CAKE WITH CAREER LOW
Headed into the third and final round of the Gator Invitational on Sunday Feb. 6th, Florida State’s Jonas Blixt trailed Florida’s Brett Stegmaier and Louisiana State’s Heath West by a stroke. All Blixt did to change that was fire a tournament and career low round of 68 to finish the weekend at -1 under par, swiping the 1st place crown from his opponents. The win marked the first for Blixt in his young Seminole career and was his highest finish since coming in 25th at the Gary Koch International last fall (Sept. 11-12).
JEON BREAKS TOP FIVE IN SEASON OPENER
Jonas Blixt was not the only Seminole atop the stack at the Gator Invitational (Feb. 5-6), as he was joined in the Top 5 by teammate and fellow freshman Song Jeon who ended up close behind at +2. Jeon finished in a three-way tie for 5th place (212) in the tournament after improving his position with a -1 under 69 in the final round on Sunday. Jeon actually registered the third lowest three-day score (212) but finished tied for 5th due to another three-way tie for the second lowest total. Jeon was instrumental in Florida State’s final round surge that included rounds of 75 or better from four of the five Seminole participants (Jeon, Blixt, Adam Wallace, Tommy Rymer). The Top 5 finish was his first at Florida State and signaled a tremendous improvement from his 72nd place finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate (Nov. 5-7) months ago.
