Oct. 14, 2002

TAMPA, Fla. –
The Florida State University men’s golf team was in eighth place in the team standings and Seminole sophomores Alan Beers and Rusty Mosley were in a tie for 14th-place in the individual standings after the first round of the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Invitational at the Old Memorial Golf Course. The event was stopped during Monday’s second round because of lightning in the area and will resume at 7:45 Tuesday morning. The second round is scheduled to be completed and the third round scheduled to be played Tuesday to finish competition in the 54-hole event.

Florida State finished with a 287-team total and was only eight strokes behind the current team leader, Ohio State, at the end of the first round. In counting their top four individual scores, the Seminoles counted a pair of 71’s, a 72 and a 73. The Seminoles’ lowest individual score in the first round was a two-over par 74.

Beers (Midlothian, Va.) and Mosley (Vidalia, Ga.) played well on both the front and back nine. Beers totaled 36 on the front and 35 on the back to gain his one-under par total. It marked his lowest round score this season and fifth time during his career he had shot 71 or better. Beers’ career-low round of 68 came at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C., during the spring of 2002. Mosley, who entered the tournament with a team-leading 73.00 strokes per round average, carded a 71 for the third time this season.

Freshman Adam Wallace (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), who is competing in his first collegiate event, carded an even-par 72 and was tied for 22nd at the end of play in round one. The Class A Boy’s Golf Champion in the state of Florida as a senior at Nease High School, Wallace was one of 36 golfers to shoot even par or better in the first round.

Freshman Gonzalo Ibarraran (Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico) was in a tie for 37th-place with a score of 73 while junior Brad Lusenhop (Gloversville, N.Y.) was in a tie for 44th-place with a score of 74 after the first round.
