NOTRE DAME, Ind. –
Florida State junior Jonas Blixt is in fifth place and the Seminole men’s golf team is in third place after the first two rounds of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic at the Warren Golf Course. The Seminoles are led by three players – Blixt, freshman Seath Lauer (tied for 11th) and sophomore Nicholas Smith (tied for 18th) – who are in the top-20 of the individual standings.
Lamar blistered the field in the first two rounds and holds the team lead heading into the Tuesday’s third and final round. The Cardinals are 19 strokes ahead of second place and host Notre Dame and 24 strokes in front of Florida State. Oliver Bekker and Justin Hardin of Lamar are the co-individual leaders with identical scores of 138 after the first 36 holes of the event.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) fired an even par 70 in the first round and a two-over par 72 in the second round to finish the first day of play with a 142 total. He begins play in the final round only four strokes behind the leaders. Blixt earned medalist honors in the Seminoles’ last outing at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate and has earned two career wins and three career top-10 finishes during his career at Florida State.
Lauer (Huntington, Ind.), who is playing in his first collegiate event, played well in his first two rounds as a Seminole with a 75 in round one and a 73 in round two. In 36 holes played during the two rounds, he was at or under par in 28 and carded only one double-bogie. Lauer is only 10 strokes off the individual lead and only six strokes outside of the top-five.
A pair of Florida State sophomores – Nicholas Smith and Matt Savage – are in the top-25 of the individual standings. Smith (Ocala, Fla.) carded a two-over par 72 in the second round and has a 149 total for the first two rounds. He is tied for 18th place heading into the final round. Savage (Louisville, Ky.) carded a 74 in the first round and is tied for 21st with a two-round total of 150. Junior Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) is tied for 38th with a 156 total.
“We did not play well as we wanted to in the first two rounds,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “But our guys hung in, turned their fortunes around and made a pretty good day of it. This is a very different course from the ones we play at home. The course has very small, undulating greens that our guys did a great job of adapting to early on. We are excited for tomorrow and we’ll see what we learned today.”
The third and final round begins Tuesday morning with the teams going off the first and 10th holes.
