Florida State Men’s Tennis Defeats 34th-Ranked Fighting Irish

The Florida State men’s tennis team picked up a big road win Friday, January 31st, when they defeated the 34th-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Irish were 0-3 coming into the match, after falling to two top-ranked opponents to start the season. The Seminoles (3-0) handed Notre Dame its fourth loss, as they defeated the Irish, 4-3.

Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof, playing at the No. 3 position, got things started for the Seminoles in doubles play, as they defeated Brian Farrell and Paul McNaughton of Notre Dame, 8-5. Notre Dame’s Brent D’Amico and Matthew Scott took the win in No. 1 doubles, defeating Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub by a score of 8-5. With the teams being tied at one match each, it came down to the No. 2 position. Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd defeated Luis Haddock and Ben Hatten to give Florida State the first point of the match.

The Seminoles continued their success in singles action. Freshman Heiner Tadault gave Florida State its second point of the day, as he defeated Eric Langenkamp, 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 2 postion, Scott of Notre Dame cut the Seminole lead, as he defeated Jurd by scores of 6-3, 6-1. Florida State’s Chip Webb, playing at the No. 5 position, defeated Patrick Buchanan, 6-4, 6-3. With the Webb win, the Seminoles again led by two, but the lead would not last for long as D’Amico upset Herrera of Florida State by scores of 6-3, 6-3. In No. 4 doubles, Notre Dame’s Farrell defeated Westerhof, 6-4, 7-5, to tie the score at 2-2. The match lay in the hands of sophomore sensation Cloer, who faced Haddock at the No. 1 position. Cloer struggled early, but came back to defeat Haddock by scores of 7-5, 6-4.

The Seminoles will return to action Sunday, February 2, when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Michigan Wolverines. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
