Florida State Men’s Tennis Defeats Panthers, 6-1

The Florida State men’s tennis team hosted the Panthers of Georgia State Sunday, March 2nd, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The Seminoles improved their record to 6-5 on the season, with a 6-1 victory against the Panthers. With the loss, Georgia State falls to 5-4.

The Seminoles opened the match with a sweep of Georgia State in doubles action. Freshmen Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof, playing at the No. 2 position, earned the first Seminole victory of the day, as they defeated Nicolas Lupica and Chris Magnone of Georgia State by a score of 8-3. In No. 3 doubles, Rodrigo Laub and Hagen Endler clinched the doubles point, knocking off Georgia State’s Matias Ormaza and Albano Franco, 8-3. Florida State’s Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd completed the doubles sweep, as they defeated Luka Bernard and Miha Lisac, 8-4.

Florida State gained momentum after earning the first point of the day in doubles and was victorious in five of six singles matches. Groslimond was impressive in No. 6 singles, as he defeated Magnone by scores of 6-1, 6-3, which gave the Seminoles a 2-0 lead. The Tribe took a three-point lead, as Jurd knocked off Lisac at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-0. The Panthers earned their single point of the day, when junior Herrera retired from his match on court three. Florida State’s Chip Webb clinched the match for the Seminoles, as he defeated Lupica by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Mat Cloer added to the Tribe’s lead, outlasting Georgia State’s Ormaza, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Westerhof, playing at the No. 4 position, earned Florida State’s sixth point of the day, as he defeated Bernard of Georgia State by scores of 6-1, 7-6 (0).

The Seminoles, riding a two-match winning streak, will return to action Saturday, March 8th, when they open ACC play at Wake Forest. The match against the Demon Deacons is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
