Florida State Men’s Tennis Falls To San Diego State, 5-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
The Florida State men’s tennis team traveled to San Diego Tuesday, March 11th, to take on the Aztecs of San Diego State University. The 30th-ranked Aztecs took advantage of playing the Seminoles on their home court, as Florida State fell, 5-2. With the loss, the Tribe falls to 8-6 on the season.

The Seminoles, ranked 45th nationally, fell in two of three doubles matches, allowing San Diego State to claim the first point of the match. Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub, playing at the No. 2 position, earned the only Florida State point in doubles action, defeating Daniel Jung and Armando Carrascosa of San Diego State, 8-5. In No. 1 doubles, Florida State’s Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd fell to Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, 9-8. Freshmen Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof were defeated by San Diego State’s Felix Hardt and Gabe Coren.

The Seminoles hoped to come from behind, after allowing the Aztecs to earn the first point of the day in doubles action, but fell in four of six singles matches in the loss. At the No. 2 position, Jurd of Florida State knocked off Ryan Redondo by scores of 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Chip Webb picked up a victory for the Seminole squad, defeating Jung of San Diego State in No. 4 singles, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Florida State’s Cloer lost a battle at the No. 1 position, as he allowed Maiberger to win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Herrera, playing at the No. 3 position, fell to San Diego State’s Hardt by scores of 7-6, 6-2. In No. 5 singles, Groslimond fell to Aztec Carrascosa, 5-7, 7-6, 10-3. Senior Laub fell at the No. 6 position to Coren of San Diego State, 6-1, 6-3.

The Seminoles will return to action Thursday, March 13th, when they take on the University of San Diego at 1:30 pm.
