TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis squad will travel to the University of Georgia on Friday to participate in the 38th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens. Twenty-five teams will be playing in the tournament, including three squads from the ACC.
“This weekend is one of the top fall college tournaments in the nation,” assistant coach Nick Crowell said. “The Southern Intercollegiate Championship will have a lot of individuals who are ranked nationally, so big victories will allow us to move up in the rankings. Our hope is that the guys will get in some great experience this weekend and gain momentum as we head into the ITA All-Americans.”
The tournament will be comprised of three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. Div. I and II singles will feature 51 and 58-man draws, respectively, while Div. III will be a 28-man bracket. There will also be two doubles divisions, with 32 teams each. Play begins on Friday at 8:00 a.m. with the Div. II and Div. III singles.
Florida State will have six players competing in the tournament partly because the Texas Invitational was cancelled due to Hurricane Rita. That forced FSU to relocate some of its athletes to the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Ytai Abougzir, Andrew Bailey, Sam Chang, Jonathas Sucupira, Maciek Sykut and Chris Westerhof will represent the Seminoles.
