RALEIGH, N.C. –
The Florida State men’s tennis team traveled to Raleigh, N.C. Sunday, March 9th, to take on the Wolfpack of NC State. The Seminoles improved to 2-0 in the conference with a 6-1 victory against the Wolfpack. With the win, the Tribe improves to 8-5 overall, 2-0 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack falls to 3-10, 0-3 in the conference.
The Seminoles started the match with a sweep in doubles action. Florida State’s Romain Jurd and Alex Herrera battled R.J. Murray and Val Banada in No. 1 doubles, but were victorious by a score of 9-7. Rodrigo Laub and Mat Cloer, playing at the No.2 position, defeated NC State’s Rehman Esmail and Jon Davis, 8-2. Freshmen Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond overpowered Will Shaw and Chris Mills of NC State by a score of 8-1.
Florida State earned momentum after earning the first point of the day in doubles play and went on to win five of six singles matches. In No. 1 singles, Cloer of Florida State defeated Murray, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Jurd knocked off Shaw of NC State at the No. 2 position by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Chip Webb, playing in No. 4 singles, was victorious, as he knocked off NC State’s Davis, 6-4, 6-3. Laub, Florida State’s only senior, earned a victory for the Seminoles at the No. 5 position, as he defeated Mills by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Groslimond added a point to the Tribe’s score, as he defeated Esmail at the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-4.
NC State earned their lone point, as Florida State’s Westerhof allowed Banada a victory at the No. 3 position. Banada won 6-2, 6-3.
The Seminoles will return to action Wednesday, March 12th, when they travel to the sunny state of California to take on San Diego State University. The match is scheduled for a 1:30 pm start.
