TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State men’s tennis team, ranked 45th in the latest ITA rankings, hosted the Maryland Terrapins Saturday, March 22nd, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The Seminoles looked impressive on the day, as they swept the Terrapins, 7-0. With the win, the Tribe improves to 10-8 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, while Maryland falls to 9-5 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.
The Seminoles opened the day with a sweep of the Terrapins in doubles action. Florida State’s freshmen Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond got the Tribe off to a quick start in No. 1 doubles, as they overpowered Chris Chiu and Scott Peters, 8-2. Mat Cloer and Chip Webb, playing at the No. 2 position, extended the Seminoles’ lead, as they knocked off Pierre Rudder and Rory Theis of Maryland by a score of 8-4. Juniors Alex Herrera and Hagen Endler completed the doubles sweep, defeating Maryland’s Troy Demers and David Reichsfeld, 8-6.
The sweep in doubles play gave the Seminoles momentum as they entered singles action. Freshman Heiner Tadault added to the Tribe’s lead, as he dominated No. 6 singles and defeated Theis of Maryland by scores of 6-1, 6-1. In No. 3 singles, Florida State’s Westerhof knocked off Rudder, 6-1, 6-2. Webb, playing at the No. 2 position for the first time this season, clinched the Seminole victory as he defeated Maryland’s Chiu by scores of 6-2, 6-2. Cloer, ranked 120th in the nation, added to the Florida State lead, as he beat Demers in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Groslimond outlasted Peters of Maryland at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 7-6 (5). In No. 4 singles, Endler defeated Reichsfeld by scores of 6-2, 7-6 (5).
The Seminoles will return to action Saturday, March 29th, when Florida State hosts the University of Virginia at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
