WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
The Florida State men’s tennis team, currently ranked 45th in the nation, traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C. Saturday, March 8th, to take on the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. In their first conference match of the season, the Seminoles defeated 25th-ranked Wake Forest by a score of 4-3. The Florida State sweep of doubles matches was enough to give the Tribe the victory, as the Seminoles and Demon Deacons split the six singles matches. With the win over the Deacons, Florida State improves to 7-5, 1-0 in the ACC, while Wake Forest falls to 6-3, 0-1 in the conference.
The Seminoles opened the day in impressive fashion, as they swept the doubles portion of the match. At the No. 1 position, Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd, ranked 27th nationally, knocked off 23rd-ranked David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon of Wake Forest by a score of 9-7. Florida State’s Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated Mike Murray and Derrick Spice, 8-6. In No. 3 doubles, Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond defeated Wake Forest’s Brett Ross and David Bere by a score of 8-5.
After sweeping doubles action, the Seminoles gained momentum entering singles play. Florida State was led by sophomore Cloer, as he defeated 66th-ranked Loewenthal in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Jurd, playing at the No. 2 position, edged past Spice of Wake Forest by scores of 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3. In No. 6 singles, Florida State’s Laub defeated Ross, 6-3, 7-5. Herrera, playing in No. 3 singles, fell to Bere of Wake Forest by scores of 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Florida State’s Westerhof battled with Murray, ranked 124th nationally, but fell, 7-5, 6-0. Freshman Heiner Tadault fell to Wake Forest’s Trent Brendon by scores of 6-1, 6-0.
The Seminoles will return to action Sunday, March 9th, when they travel to Raliegh, N.C. to take on the Wolfpack of NC State.
