TALLAHASSEE, FL.– No. 54 Florida State men’s tennis team fought hard in difficult conditions to defeat the 38th ranked University of Virginia 4-3 today at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. With the win the Seminoles move to 5-5 for the season (1-0 in the ACC) while the Cavaliers drop to 1-1 overall (0-1 in the ACC).
The Seminoles got off to a good start in the doubles portion of the match. FSU’s Xavier Luscan and Bartosz Koldej teamed up to take an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Just minutes later the tandem of Jerrod Owen and Jeff Scarella clinched the doubles point for the `Noles with an 8-5 win at the No. 3 position.
Though the doubles point was secured for the Seminoles, Gustav Bucht and Alex Herrera refused to back down, battling until the end against the nations No. 1 ranked doubles team of Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery before falling 6-8.
Florida State kept the momentum going in singles despite a short rain delay early on. Xavier Luscan led the way for the Seminoles as he defeated UVA’s Huntley Montgomery in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position.
Virginia collected wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles to even the score 2-2. Florida State then moved ahead 3-2 as Jeff Scarella won his fifth straight singles match this season by defeating Jonathan Chou 7-5, 7-6 at No. 6. With another win for Virginia at No. 3 singles, the match was once again tied.
The pressure was now on FSU freshman Jerrod Owen. After winning the first set 7-5, Owen dropped the second set 5-7. In the third and decisive set, Owen showed his fighting spirit and moved ahead to take the set 6-3, thereby clinching the match for the Seminoles.
Florida State men’s tennis will be back in action on Tuesday March 6th when they host Vanderbilt at 3:30 p.m.
