TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Sunday marked a good day for the Seminoles at
the Rice University Indoor Championships. Freshman Rodrigo Laub captured
the “B” Draw Consolation Championship while junior Jay Travis and sophomore
Noah Schnell wrapped up the Consolation Doubles Championship.
Laub defeated Eric Gildhorn of South Florida in the finals of the
“B” Draw Consolation bracket on Sunday. The closest match of the
tournament for Laub was in the quarterfinals when he defeated South
Florida’s Jit Shah in three sets, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3. For the tournament
Laub went 4-1. His only loss came to Kai Reike of Nebraska, who advanced
to the finals of the “B” bracket.
Joining Laub in Texas were Noah Schnell and Jay Travis. Both
Schnell and Travis won their first round singles matches before losing in
the second round. However, together the duo won the Flight “A” Consolation
Doubles Championships. The big match along the way for the pair was in the
semifinals when they defeated Petty and Murillo from UT-San Antonio 9-8,
7-4 in the tiebreaker. In the finals, Schnell and Travis defeated South
Florida’s Jit Shah and Evan Pinther 8-2.
On Saturday, sophomore Jeff Scarella won two matches to advance to
the quarterfinals of the ACC Indoor Championships. Scarella defeated Wake
Forest’s Brian Murphy in three sets late Saturday setting up a quarterfinal
showdown with the tournament’s third seed, Duke’s Andres Pedroso. Pedroso
received a bye in the first round and won in straight sets in the second
round. On Sunday, Scarella took Pedroso to the limit in the first set
before dropping a hard-fought opening set tiebreaker 7-4. In the second
set Pedroso capitalized on the momentum and won 6-2.
Other Seminoles competing at the ACC Indoor Championships included
transfer Xavier Luscan and senior Mike Ingham. Luscan won his first round
match when North Carolina’s Trystan Meniane retired after losing the first
set 6-0. In the second round, Luscan lost to Wake Forest’s Michael Berger
6-2, 6-4. Ingham faced Wake Forest’s Michael Murray in the first round and
lost a three-setter 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
The Seminoles will open their 2000 spring dual match season on the
road against New Mexico on January 28th and Texas Christian on January
