Feb. 9, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. –
Florida State, which has won two of its last three and four of its last six games, travels to Raleigh to face NC State. The Seminoles are looking to gain their fifth victory over a ranked ACC team this season with wins over then No. 24 Maryland (Dec. 28, 79-75), then No. 7 North Carolina (Jan. 22, 90-81 overtime), then No. 10 Wake Forest (Jan. 25, 75-70) and then No. 15 Georgia Tech (Feb. 3, 81-65. It marks the first time the Seminoles have defeated four ranked teams since the 1996-97 season. Each of the four ranked teams the Seminoles defeated were conference teams as the Seminoles gained victories over No. 19 North Carolina, No. 5 Maryland, No. 8 Clemson and No. 5 Wake Forest. Florida State also defeated four ranked ACC teams during the 1992-93 season but has never defeated five ranked league teams in a single season. The last time the Seminoles defeated more than four ranked teams in a single season was during the 1992-93 season when they defeated seven teams in the top 25 at the time of the game on their way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Following tonight’s game against NC State, the Seminoles play host to Clemson (Feb. 14, 1 p.m.) and Virginia (Feb. 17, 7 p.m.) in their next two games.

ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE Tim Pickett
Senior All-America candidate Tim Pickett, who has twice been named the ACC Player of the Week this season, averaged 26.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in two games last week and enters Tuesday night’s game against NC State averaging a team leading 16.3 points per game. He scored his career-high of 33 points (25 in the second half) as Florida State defeated No. 15 ranked Georgia Tech Feb. 3 in Tallahassee. He has made 16 3-point field goals in the last three games and leads the ACC with 73 3-point field goals made. He needs only 12 3-pont field goals during the reminder of the season to surpass his total of 84 from last season which ranks as the second highest single-season total in school history. The single-season school record for 3-point shots made is 115 by George McCloud during the 1988-89 season.

LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO…
…Defeat NC State for the first time since Jan. 23, 1999 and break an 11-game losing streak against the Wolfpack. The streak is the Seminoles longest against an ACC team since joining the ACC to begin the 1991-92 season;
…Defeat NC State in Raleigh for the first time since Jan. 3, 1998 when the Seminoles defeated the Wolfpack, 68-55 in Reynolds Coliseum. The Seminoles are looking to win for the first time in the last six trips to Raleigh and for the first time in the RBC Center;
…Win its first ACC road game since March 3, 2001 when the Seminoles won at Clemson (75-63). The Seminoles enter Saturday’s game against NC State looking to break a 20-game road losing streak against ACC teams;
…Win its fifth ACC game of the season to mark its highest victory total in the conference since winning five during the 1998-99 season when the Seminoles finished with a 5-11 league record. Florida State won a school record 12 ACC games during the 1992-93 season;
…Defeat NC State and give second-year head Coach Leonard Hamilton his first victory over the Wolfpack. Hamilton has guided Florida State to victories over both North Carolina and Wake Forest this season for the first time in his career and has defeated each team in the ACC at least once while at Florida State.

FLORIDA STATE VS. NC STATE – THE LAST GAME
Levi Watkins hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute to go to put North Carolina State ahead to stay and help the Wolfpack beat Florida State 58-53 Jan. 11 in Tallahassee. Al Thornton’s 3-pointer from the corner with 1:34 left capped a 9-0 run that gave Florida State a 53-52 lead, its only advantage of the second half. Watkins, who scored 13 points off the bench, gave the Wolfpack the lead back 25 seconds later. After Watkins’ basket, Engin Atsur took the ball away from Florida State’s Alexander Johnson – one of two Seminoles’ turnovers in the final 52 seconds. Florida State then fouled Julius Hodge, who hit two free throws for a 57-53 lead with 27 seconds left. Atsur hit another free throw with 13 seconds left to complete the scoring as the Wolfpack won their 10th straight over Florida State dating back to Jan. 23, 1999. N.C. State led 30-25 at the half. Hodge led the Wolfpack with 15 points, while Atsur had 11. Anthony Richardson had 12 points and Tim Pickett had 10 on just 3-for-10 shooting for Florida State.
