Florida State Posts 13 Student-Athletes To All-ACC Academic Indoor Track And Field Teams

June 18, 2009

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State track and field teams are continuing to rack up awards, but this time it’s their off the field success that is earning recognition. The 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference announced the All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Teams with a total of 13 student-athletes representing the Garnet and Gold. Leading the way is Javier Garcia-Tunon for the third-consecutive year. Florida State, alongside Duke, posted the most athletes in the conference with six women and seven men.

“It’s just awesome that we had the most All-ACC Academic performers out of all the distinguished universities in our conference,” FSU head coach Bob Braman said. “That’s a credit to our Academic Support staff and the hard work of our student-athletes.”

Although there was no single leader for the women since most of the honorees are repeated winners from last year’s combined indoor and outdoor academic teams, all six women making the list achieved a 3.0 grade point average or higher throughout the indoor season. Among the elite students were graduate student and team co-captain Keyla Smith, who is currently working on her master’s degree in sports administration, juniors Caila Coleman (financial accounting and real estate) and Lizbeth Mabry (international affairs and geography) and sophomores Brittany St. Louis (family and child sciences) and Kim Williams (business administration).

Joining Garcia-Tunon, who is studying for his master’s in business administration, on the list are seniors Matt Wernke (biochemical engineering) and Travis Whitfield (physical education), junior Aaron Steele (graphic design) and sophomores Gonzalo Barroilhet (management), Brian Chibudu (biochemistry) and Matt Leeder (education).

Smith and Wernke were also awarded ACC Post Graduate scholarships for the impressive achievements in the classroom.
