Florida State Practice Report: August 16

In the morning session of Saturday’s two a-day schedule, head coach Jimbo Fisher was pleased with several areas of his football team. With many key pieces returning on offense from last year’s national championship team, the defense held its ground in goal line and short-yardage situations on Saturday morning as contributions were made from both veterans and underclassmen in stopping FSU’s offense. While the defensive line has been a rotating door thus far of players trying to help fill the void of All-American nose guard Timmy Jernigan, Fisher has praised his group of newcomers recently such as freshman defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi. However, the fifth-year head coach has also been quick to remind media members that progress is being made by some of the more seasoned defensive linemen too, especially after today’s first session.

“I was very proud of the defense in many short-yardage and goal line (formations) today. I thought they did a really nice job,” Fisher said. “There were guys up front really battling and banging, and I thought today was really a productive day. Derrick (Mitchell Jr.) and some of those guys are doing a really nice job in there. Justin Shanks – you see him flashing in the middle. All those older guys aren’t giving it up, they’re really banging in there. Derrick, when he’s healthy, is a heck of a football player.”
