Florida State Qualifies Nine In Last Day Of Disney Invitational

March 21, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida State track and field teams concluded the final day of competition at the Walt Disney World Invitational with a fantastic showing as a total of nine Seminoles earned regional qualifying times/marks and four athletes set personal records.

“The field event athletes really got a lot done this weekend,” head coach Bob Braman said. “They all got a lot of good marks. Sprinters and hurdlers also did a nice job. We had a successful meet. We earned a lot of marks which I what we came to do.”

Leading the women was sophomore Teona Rodgers (Tampa, Fla.) with an outstanding performance in both her events. First up on the All-American’s list was the 100m hurdles where she qualified for the finals with her first-place preliminary sprint of 13.20. With her new personal-record time, Rodgers hit the track for the finals where she not only earned first place again, but also set a new personal record as well as became the record holder in FSU history for the 100m hurdles with a regional qualifying time of 13.01. However, Rodgers wasn’t done yet. The Seminole went on to compete in the 100m dash where she again qualified for finals with her time of 11.55 which also was another lifetime-best record and regional qualifying time.

“The highlight of the day for the women was Teona Rodgers,” Braman said. “It was a great opening for the outdoor season for her. Candyce McGrone also did a good job in the preliminaries. Allyn also had an improvement on her other regional mark she had previously earned.”

Other notable women who produced regional marks were Lizbeth Mabry (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) in the pole vault with a personal record mark of 3.85m, Kamorean Hayes (Charlotte, N.C.) and Allyn Laughlin (Ambridge, Pa.) in the shot put with their first and second place finishes respectively and Candyce McGrone (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the 100m dash with a time of 11.64 which earned her second place.

“Michael Putnam was the highlight for the men,” Braman said. “That was a great effort on Michael’s part.”

On the men’s front, Miami native Michael Putnam had another great day of leading the pack as he captured first place in the shot put with a mark of 18.08 which also denotes a personal record. Redshirt freshman Justin Byrd (Lauderhill, Fla.) also found success as he qualified himself for the finals in the 110m hurdles with his time of 15.13. Byrd completed the finals with a fifth-place finish time of 15.04.

The three other Seminoles to earn regional qualifications in their events were senior Javier Garcia-Tunon (Miami, Fla.) in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.10 and Andrew Batchelor (Pompano Beach, Fla.) with his high jump of 2.10.

The Garnet and Gold will head home to prepare for the FSU Relays beginning Thursday, March 26-28.
