TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After a three-game sweep of Georgia Tech this weekend, the Florida State baseball team makes a quick turnaround when it heads to Gainesville on Tuesday for a showdown with in-state rival Florida at 7 p.m. at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium at Perry Field.
The series is being featured as part of the SEC Network/ESPN3 package with the crew of Tom Hart, Kyle Peterson, Chris Burke and Laura Rutledge providing the commentary.
The pitching matchup will feature Florida State lefthander Tyler Holton (0-1, 2.77 ERA) and Florida’s Dan Dunning (1-0, 4.91).
Florida State (13-3, 3-0 ACC) is coming off a solid showing against the Yellow Jackets, finishing with a 30-14 advantage in total runs and a .382 batting average (39-of-102), which led to a .449 on-base percentage.
Among the individual leaders for the Seminoles in the series were John Sansone (.615 BA, 8-of-13, double, HR), Cal Raleigh (.545, 6-of-11, HR) Dylan Busby (.417, 5-of-12, triple, two HRs) and Taylor Walls (.417, 5-of-12, seven runs).
Florida State’s pitching was also instrumental in the victory as it allowed only 13 earned runs and posted 30 strikeouts. Mike Compton led the way with six strikeouts, moving his total to 19 on the season.
The three victories also moved Florida State up in four of the five major polls as the Seminoles now sit eighth (NCBWA), 11th (D1baseball.com), 11th (Perfect Game), 13th (Baseball America), 14th (Collegiate Baseball) and 15th (USA Today/ESPN). Their counterparts are ranked first in each of the five aforementioned polls.
Florida (17-1, 0-0 SEC) is led offensively by the trio of Peter Alonso (.424 BA, 25-59), Deacon Lipu (.403, 25-62) and Dalton Guthrie (.403, 29-72). The Gators are 12-0 at home this season with their only loss coming at No. 6 Miami on Feb. 27.
