TEMPE, Ariz. — Freshman rightfield Matt Diaz belted a two-run blast in the second inning to lead No. 19 Florida State to a 6-1 victory over No. 6 Arizona State in front of 3,719 fans at Packard Stadium.
Lefthander Wes Crawford (1-0) earned the win as he surrendered one run on four hits and struck out four batters in six-plus innings pitched. Crawford was relieved by righthander John Bentley after allowing a leadoff basehit in the seventh inning. Bentley earned his first save of the season as he hurled a two-hit performance in three innings.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as first baseman Matt Woodward singled with two outs and Diaz drove him home as he belted a two-run homer for his first hit of the season.
Arizona State cut the lead to 2-1 as second baseman Chip Gosewisch led off the fourth inning with a single. The Sun Devils loaded the bases and Gosewisch scored on a basehit to leftfield by rightfielder Jeff Phelps.
Florida State scored two runs in the eighth inning as designated hitter Kevin Cash and centerfielder Brian Cox drove in Brooks Badeaux and Jose Zabala on RBI-basehits, respectively, increasing the Seminoles’ advantage to 4-1.
FSU rightfielder Terry Henderson and shortstop Brett Groves led off the ninth inning with back-to-back walks and both scored to give the Seminoles a 6-1 lead and their final runs. Henderson scored on a wild pitch and Groves was driven in by a basehit by Zabala.
ASU lefthander Phill Lowery (2-1) gave up two runs on eight hits while fanning seven Seminoles in six innings pitched in the loss.
Florida State’s 12 hits were the first time this season FSU has had double-digit hits.
