TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 17 Florida State men’s golf team tees off in the NCAA Championship for the third straight year this weekend. 30 teams are vying for the National Championship beginning Friday at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
“This is one of the goals we set at the start of the year and it’s going to be exciting,” said head coach Trey Jones. “It was a great experience this past week with how the guys stood up at the end to play a really hard final hole 1-under par for us to be in this situation. I’m proud of what they did and what we’ve done this year.”
Although this is the fourth time in five years the Seminoles have reached the final site, Florida State is fielding the youngest team on the field with two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior. The Seminoles are also one of only three teams (Arkansas and Washington) with only one upperclassman in the line-up.
“We’re going need two guys to finish in the top 10 or 15 in stroke play,” continued Jones. “Going into this caliber of a field, our one and two guys have to match the other one and two guys. It’s going to take five guys to go out and get it done and we need two to play extremely well.”
The top eight teams in stroke play competition will advance to match play which begins Tuesday, May 27. The top 40 individuals will play for individual honors on Monday.
The Seminoles advanced out of the NCAA Raleigh Regional with Georgia Tech, Washington, Texas A&M and Kentucky. The Seminoles tee off at 7:00 a.m. Central time from the first hole with Texas and Texas A&M. The three teams play again together on Saturday in the second round teeing off from the 10th hole at 12:20 p.m. Central time
The Seminoles finished second at the ACC Championship in April and earned a team title at the USF Invitational in March. The team had a total of six top-five team finishes this year. Jack Maguire was named the ACC Freshman of the Year after winning two titles this season and sophomore Hank Lebioda was named to the All-ACC team for the second straight year.
On Thursday, both Lebioda and Maguire were named to the southeast Division I PING All-Region Team.
