TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 32 Florida State men’s tennis team (2-0) returns to the courts this weekend playing four matches in three days. After playing at the Indoor Courts last weekend, the team is looking forward to playing outdoors at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Play begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast.
Later that day, the team takes on No. 73 UAB at 3:30 p.m. On Monday, Florida State has another doubleheader competing against No. 53 South Alabama at 9:00 a.m. and then closes the holiday off against Bethune-Cookman at 3:30 p.m.
“We have two ranked opponents this year and an improved Florida Gulf Coast team,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We understand they have very good players. UAB and South Alabama have grown into great programs. This weekend is getting us into shape, it’s good to know that we’ve played enough matches to start the season. It also gives us an opportunity to play a lot of our players since our team is so deep this year. Last weekend was a good start, but we need to keep rolling and get ready for National Indoors next week.”
This weekend’s has the Seminoles first ranked opponents of the year with South Alabama and UAB. The only players ranked this weekend are Florida State’s with sophomore Benjamin Lock at No. 99 and No. 107 sophomore Dominic Cotrone. In doubles, senior Andres Bucaro and Lock are ranked No. 27.
The Seminoles are 6-2 against UAB and 15-6 against South Alabama. Florida State played both teams last year and came away with both wins. After playing Florida Gulf Coast and Bethune-Cookman in fall tournaments, this marks the first time the teams are playing in a dual match.
