GREENSBORO, N.C. –
It’s been almost two decades since Florida State and Penn State met on the basketball court, but that dry spell will come to an end during the 2008-09 season. The Seminoles and Nittany Lions will face each other on December 3 as part of the 2008 Women’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge as announced by the league offices on Thursday (May 1).
“We are excited about the opportunity to play Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge,” FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. “They bring back almost everyone from last year’s team that beat seven schools in the postseason and played a total of 14 postseason teams so they are going to quite the test for us. Last year’s game at Indiana was such a great experience and we look forward to bringing that excitement to Tallahassee.”
The two teams last met during the first round of the 1990 NCAA Tournament in Tallahassee. Penn State came away with the 83-73 victory. The Nittany Lions hold a 3-0 advantage over Florida State with victories at the 1983 Mid-American Classic in Columbia, Mo., and the 1984 Miami Masonic Classic in Miami, Fla.
Last season Florida State went 2-0 against the Big Ten, including a 60-49 win over Big Ten regular season champion Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. FSU won its Challenge game last year, defeating Indiana, 85-78, in Bloomington last season. Indiana native Mara Freshour (Nashville, Ind.) scored 21 points and broke the school’s career free throw percentage record during the contest.
The ACC went 8-3 against the Big Ten last year during the Challenge.
