TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Sunshine Network will televise three Florida State soccer games live this season including the showdown between the Seminoles and Gators. This is the first-time since the 1999 season-opener that the network has carried the UF/FSU game. The Seminoles will make their first TV appearance of the season just two games into the 2002 campaign when they host Oregon in the Nike/FSU Invitational Tournament Sunday, September 1 at 2:00 p.m. Florida State’s final regular season television appearance will come a week after the squad meets the Gators when the Seminoles host NCAA Tournament team UCF Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m.
“We have always felt that Sunshine does a great job of covering our program and we are very pleased that partnership will continue this season,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “For them to have selected Oregon, Florida and UCF as the three games they will broadcast this year will give everybody the opportunity to see us play opening weekend and that is fantastic. Soccer fans throughout the southeast will also be able to see one of the best college soccer games of the year when Florida State and Florida meet. Then the fans of Florida get another opportunity to see a great intra-state game when we host UCF.”
After waiting until the mid-way point of 2001 to make their first television appearance, FSU soccer fans won’t have to wait nearly as long in 2002. The Seminoles will make their first Sunshine appearance of the year during the opening weekend of the season when they host Oregon at the Nike/FSU Soccer Tournament. This will be the second-ever meeting between two teams and Oregon’s first-ever visit to Tallahassee. The Seminoles defeated the Ducks 1-0 in Oregon in 2000.
“I am very appreciative that Sunshine chose to broadcast one of the games on our opening weekend this season,” said Baker. “With as many home games as we have this year, it is a great opportunity for us to get some exposure for our 2002 home schedule. It will also give soccer fans in the viewing area a chance to see the quality of this year’s squad and that will hopefully draw some more fans to our games this season.”
Nearly four weeks after the Oregon game, Sunshine will return to the Seminole Soccer Complex for one of the nation’s premiere soccer rivalries when the Florida Gators come to Tallahassee. The Gators return to Tallahassee in 2002 for the first time since the Seminoles downed UF to open the 2000 season. After the Gators took a 5-0 lead in the first five years of the series, FSU has won two of the last three meetings between the schools including an NCAA Tournament game in Gainesville in 2000. This is the first time the Gators and Seminoles have played on Sunshine since the 1999 season-opener. This season’s game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start Friday, September 27.
“The last time Sunshine did this game we were on the short-end of the stick as they opened the season in defense of their 1998 National Championship,” said Baker. “Since that time we have been able to bring in some talent of our own and there have been some wonderful games between the two programs the last two seasons.
“We were fortunate enough to defeat them twice in 2000 and then in 2001 they came back and beat us 2-0 in a great match played in front of almost 3,500 fans. It was a very exciting game and they stuck two quality goals in the back of the net. This is a game that is not only one of the best in the state of Florida but it is one of the best in the country and it is great that Sunshine will be there to show it live.”
Florida State will make its last regular season television appearance of the season Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. when 2001 Atlantic Sun champions UCF comes to Tallahassee. The Seminoles have won the last two meetings between the teams including a 5-0 victory in Orlando in 2001. Both teams are coming off NCAA Tournament appearances and the Golden Knights return eight starters from a squad that went 11-1-0 in conference last season.
