Feb. 14, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In the final day of competition for the Seminole Classic, the Lady Seminoles defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls 2-0 to advance to the championship game where they lost to #12 Cal-Berkeley 1-0. Florida State is 5-3 on the season.

“We couldn’t scratch a run off of Cal-Berkeley in the two games,” Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. “Joclyn Forest is one of the best pitchers in the nation. She was keeping us off balance all day, throwing riseballs and mixing it up. We weren’t patient at the beginning but we got better towards the end. We played well against a team that made the college world series last year.”

The Lady Seminoles started the day facing Florida Atlantic. Florida State scored in the bottom of the first inning off Natalie Bennett’s double to centerfield to bring in Brandi Stuart. Both teams remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Teresa Edenfield hit her second homerun of the season with a lone homerun over the left center wall to give the Lady Seminoles the 2-0 win. Stuart led the team going 2-3 with two stolen bases as Bennett went 1-2 with an RBI and Edenfield went 1-3 with an RBI. Leslie Malerich threw eight strikeouts against Florida Atlantic and walked one.

In the championship game, both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Candice Harper hit a double RBI to centerfield, scoring the winning run for the Golden Bears. Staci Brandon and Kimmy Carter both went 1-2 from the plate as pitcher Jen White-Stokes struckout two and walked one in six innings.

The Lady Seminoles will travel to Macon, Georgia on Wednesday, February 16th to take on the Mercer Lady Bears beginning at 4:00pm.
