FRESNO, Calif. – The Florida State softball team broke a eight game losing streak this afternoon in the final day of the Hallowell Chevrolet Classic, hosted by Fresno State University. The Lady Seminoles topped Illinois State 1-0 and Texas Tech 3-0.
Florida State scored the only run of the game in the 1st inning when sophomore Kimmy Carter stole second base and scored on a Redbirds error. The Lady Seminoles held off Illinois State, who beat #3 UCLA last night, to take the 1-0 win. Junior Brandi Stuart led the team, going 2-3 with one sacrifice as junior Natalie Bennett added a hit. Sophomore pitcher Leslie Malerich took the win, going to 11-7 on the season and breaking a six game losing streak. Malerich pitched her fifth shutout of the season, giving up only one hit and striking out eight.
Senior Teresa Edenfield gave the Lady Seminoles their first run of the game off a suicide squeeze to score junior Rita Brooks in the 4th inning. FSU followed in the 5th inning when junior Jen White-Stokes drove a triple to the left field wall, setting up for Carter’s double RBI to left field to give FSU a 2-0 lead. With Brooks taking a single up the left line and advancing Carter to 3rd, the duo then produced a double steal, with Carter stealing home for the 3-0 win. Brooks led the team, going 2-3 as Carter was 1-3 with a double and RBI and White-Stokes was 1-3 with a triple. White-Stokes also took the win, striking out eight batter and walking one for her third shutout of the season.
The Lady Seminoles improve to 17-13 on the season and end the spring break trip at 3-9. FSU returns home for a doubleheader against Princeton on Wednesday, March 15 beginning at 5:00pm and a single game on Thursday, March 16 with Iowa State at 5:00pm. The Tallahassee Democrat Lady Seminole Invitational will be held Friday, March 15-Sunday, March 17.
