GREENVILLE, N.C. – Florida State sophomore Leslie Malerich earned two
complete shutout victories as she pitched the Lady Seminoles to 1-0 and 7-0
wins over No. 24 East Carolina, Friday afternoon at the ECU Softball Field.
Malerich improved to 26-13 on the year, including 13 shutouts. The Tribe
improved to 38-24 on the season while the Lady Pirates fell to 49-11.

Brandi Stuart went 3-for-3 in game one and scored the game’s lone run. In
the FSU second inning, Stuart led off with a single to third base and
advanced to second on a foul out in which the ECU third baseman ran into the
dugout after catching the foul ball which automatically advances the
runners. Stuart stole third base and Natalie Bennett, who went 2-for-3 in
the game, drove her in with a base hit down the middle. After the Pirates
had a hit in the first inning, Malerich did not even allow another base
runner until the ECU fifth. For the game, Malerich allowed just three hits
and struck out five ECU players. Stuart and Bennett combined for five of
FSU’s six hits while Becky Brock ripped a double to left field in the fifth
inning. Catcher Andi Lyons threw out two ECU base runners as the FSU
defense had a solid outing. ECU pitcher Denise Reagan fell to 21-5 with the
loss.

A four-run third inning gave the Lady Seminoles an early lead in the second
game. The inning started out with a rare play. Brock struck out swinging
on a wild pitch and reached first base as the ball got away from the
catcher. Staci Brandon followed with a bunt single. Serita Brooks hit a
ground ball to third base and the win carried the throw out of play. The
throwing error scored two runs and Brooks advanced all the way to third.
Stuart scored Brooks with a base hit, then stole second and third base and
scored on a base hit by Teresa Edenfield. The Pirates threatened in the
sixth inning with two on and none out, but a ground out and a double play
got the Lady Seminoles out of the inning. FSU scored three more runs in the
seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Felicia Williams walked and scored on a base
hit to left field by Kimmy Carter and two more runs scored on an error.
Malerich allowed just two Lady Pirate hits while ECU pitcher Laurie Davidson
fell to 9-3.

The wins also give Florida State a 4-2 record in Southern Atlantic Alliance
Conference play, which awards an automatic bid to regionals to the team with
the best record in competition between the five ACC schools and ECU. The
Lady Pirates go to 2-4 in the SAA.

“Obviously these were wins we needed very badly to help our standing in the
Southern Atlantic Alliance,” FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne said. “We were very
focused out there today and played smart softball. Our defense really made
some big plays and Leslie (Malerich) was just outstanding on the mound. I
am really proud of how we got after it today.”

The Lady Seminoles will play two more before heading back to Tallahassee
with a doubleheader at Campbell on Saturday.
