BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida State softball team went 2-0 in the Florida
Atlantic Softball Tournament today in Boca Raton, Fla. The Lady Seminoles
took game one 5-1 from Eastern Michigan and game two 2-0 from Florida Atlantic.
Junior Teresa Edenfield got the scoring started in game one for FSU with a
single RBI in the 3rd inning, followed by a double RBI from Kelly Miller
and single RBI from Becky Wallace to give the Lady Seminoles the 3-0 lead.
The Lady Seminoles scored two more in the 5th inning when Jackie Hirschfeld
scored on an EMU error and Rita Brooks, who reached base on the error,
scored when the overthrown ball went to the right field wall. Eastern
Michigan scored one in the 6th inning off a Lady Seminole error but FSU took
the win 5-1. Jen White-Stokes struck out two batters and had no walks in her
third win of the season.
The second game remained scoreless until the 6th inning when junior Rita
Brooks took the first pitch over the right field wall for a two-run homer,
her first as a Lady Seminole, giving FSU the 2-0 win. Brooks was a perfect
3-3 from the plate with two RBI’s. Pitcher Leslie Malerich threw a shutout,
giving up only one hit and striking out six.
Florida State is 13-3 on the season and will continue competition in the
FAU Worth Softball tournament on Sunday. The Lady Seminoles will face
Villanova at 10:00am and Furman at Noon.
