TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s volleyball team continued preparations for the 2001 season with the 2001 FSU Spring Volleyball Tournament. FSU hosted Bethune-Cookman, Belmont University and the University of Tampa in Tully Gymnasium. FSU won all three matches it played and only dropped one set the entire weekend.
“This year’s spring ball is really exciting for us because we have all but one of our players returning,” FSU head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud said. “The kids really get a lot of time and hours to correct things before coming back in the fall.”
In opening round action, the Lady Seminoles defeated Bethune-Cookman. Florida State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 30-16 win in the first set, before setting down the Lady Wildcats, 30-15 and 30-20. In the second round, Florida State continued to dominate its competition, defeating Belmont in straight sets. The Garnet and Gold opened up with a 30-15 win in the first set, followed by a 30-22 win in Set Two. FSU wrapped up the win with a 30-25 win.
In the final round of competition against Tampa, Florida State lost its only set of the day when they fell in the second set, 27-30. FSU started off with a commanding 30-14 win over the Lady Spartans, before dropping the close second set. The Lady `Noles wrapped up their third win in the tournament with a 30-28 win in game three, followed by a 15-13 win in the final set.
“This is an excellent opportunity for us to prepare for the upcoming season,” Reynaud said. “Two of the teams we have played in the spring, Texas A&M and Bethune-Cookman, are on our schedule for this season, so it gives us an opportunity to prepare for them as well.”
FSU wraps up its spring competition schedule with the South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Fla., on April 14.
