GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Florida State Seminoles swept the ACC weekly
softball honors as Staci Brandon was named the Player of the Week and Leslie
Malerich was named the league’s pitcher of the week for the fifth time this
season. The duo led the ?Noles to a 4-1 record over the past week.
Brandon, a native of Peora, Ariz., turned in a solid week at the plate for
FSU as she finished the five games 10-for-23 (.435) with eight RBI and six
runs scored. On Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader with Auburn,
the junior left fielder went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored as
Florida State won the game by a 7-0 count. On Sunday, she went 3-for-8 eight
in the two games with North Carolina, including a two-run triple in FSU’s
10-9 win in game one, and drove in the winning run in game two with an RBI
single. Brandon has now hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games, including her
current six-game hitting streak.
Malerich, a native of Merrillville, Ind., was once again dominant on the
mound as she went 4-1 this past week with a pair of shutout victories. She
opened the week with a complete-game, 7-0 win at Florida A&M, and followed
that outing with another complete-game, 7-0 win over Auburn in the first
game of a twin bill. On Sunday, in the second game of FSU’s doubleheader
with North Carolina, the sophomore hurler entered the contest with one out
in the first inning and the Seminoles trailing by a 4-0 score. She proceeded
to shut out the Tar Heels for the remaining 6.2 innings en route to her
fourth win of the week, a 5-4 decision.
